Chocolate Mousse

My eldest son went for a sleep over on Saturday night, which left my youngest and I with a secret dessert for Sunday night tea. He's not very good at remembering things......but he does love the chocolate mousse for greedy goose and the clue he gave his brother to guess the pudding....he whispered greedy goose....and the eldest imediately shouted chocolate mousse.

What to Cook & How to Cook It

Body:

I bought this with a view to getting the boys to cook with me for Sunday night tea. The layout is great for anybody wishing to start cooking or to try new things. I did think about getting it for my Mum but felt it a bit too adventurous in terms of the tastes and not really good for just the 2 of them. However if your a modern day family with a wide variety of tastes looking for a family cookbook with good step by step instructions this is great.

Fish Pie

Not the healthiest of fish pies....but just the ticket for a family tea with Papa to join us. My youngest, helped cook the fish, loves pouring, so he poured the milk the cream and put the accompliments into the cooking sauce, bay onion cloves and fish.

None left.....enough said!

Chicken Stew with Cider

A very easy way to cook chicken thighs........although messy and not the recipe to try just after your wife has cleaned the back splash and hob! I also don't think this is a recipe to try if your on a diet. I found it to be quite oiley with the lardons and the Chiken skin. Please don't let that detract from trying it, the recipe was very tasty, lovely warm and comforting dish just the ticket for a Valentines meal. As accompliment I served it a parlsey mash, great for soaking up the juices.

Boston Beans

The Recipe in the book is really from Baked Beans......however I was keen to get the slow cooker on the go otherwise I'll get blamed for having another gadget in the kitchen that collects dust. I also doctored the recipe in that I used a tin of tomatoes and diced pork shoulder rather than pork belly (something to do with my child hood and my dad presenting me with some undercooked congeled fatty thing telling me it was nice!)

This had a really authentic taste, very easy to cook and superb way to use dried haricot beans.

I have been browsing again in Blackwells, which is really a bad thing as they always have the cooking books set out so well that you stumble across the not so famous looking books that you have to pick up and thumb through them......and if you do that .....then you have to buy them!

Stéphane Reynaud's 365 Good Reasons To Sit Down To Eat

Body:

A last minute request from my brother in law for a Christmas list item gave me the opportunity to ask for this mighty tomb. I'd vowed not to get anymore cooking books for a while .... apart from the one I got the boys and my pre christmas treat of Nigel's new book :).

Peter Gordons Sweet Potatoe, Rosemary and Chilli Mash

I was looking for an accompliment to a simple chicken supper and decided to use the same recipe book. The boys have taken a severe dislike of sweet potatoe (something to do with baby food perhaps?), so I took the opportunity to make it for the Saturday night dinner.

This adds a lovely twist of combining sweet potatoe with chilli, rosemary, garlic and butter!

Simple Chicken Supper

In a nut shell very easy and tasty! This is the kind of recipe you need after a harassed day maintaining the high energy and focus you need to look after 2 boys. Something that practically cooks it's self with a little nurturing. The addition of lemon, parsley and wine at the end, makes a great sauce.

Ballymaloe Cookery Course

Body:

I bought this looking for guidance on lots of recipe's, perhaps with an element of teaching me how to cook. It's a great encyclopedia of over 1000 recipes. My sole resource for flap jacks and tradition cooking. I use it for my pizza dough and just looking for an easy explanation of sour dough starters, it finally gave me the confidence to give it a try.

At 645 pages....it's a mighty book of recipe wisdom!
